CHAPTER THIRTY

Michael Simon had no idea O’Reilly was on his way to L’Ancresse to pick him up. It was not yet ten in the morning and Michael had already knocked back three fingers of 15 year-old single malt. Michael wasn’t a heavy drinker and the whisky had taken effect straight away. Daniel Simon had phoned him with the news of Natasha’s death and Michael had broken down. He and Natasha weren’t particularly close – she and Luke had a much closer bond, but she was still his little sister and the news had hurt.

Michael wasn’t sure how much more he could take. The events over the past three days didn’t seem real. The tragedy that had befallen the Simon family wasn’t right. The atrocities suffered were something that happened to other families – not theirs and Michael was close to slipping over the edge for good. The whisky had helped. The fierce burn as it flowed down his throat and stung his stomach was worth it. The pain was numbed and the memories were stilled.

Michael stepped outside into the morning sunshine and gazed through bloodshot eyes at the Simon estate. Theirs was by far the largest property on the island but the accumulation of the land had come with a high price tag. Michael didn’t know the full extent of the trials overcome by his great, great, great grandfather, Joel but he was aware of how tough it was back then.

“Nothing is ever for free,” Daniel Simon had quoted Joel whenever he saw fit.

The words didn’t exactly ring true for Michael. His life had been an easy one. From an early age Michael hadn’t wanted for anything. He knew no other life than one filled with affluence and abundance.

Perhaps this was the way it was supposed to be. Perhaps a balance was needed and the recent tragedies were the only way the universe could reset that balance. Michael wasn’t sure. He’d never been much of a spiritual person and he didn’t believe in Ying and Yang and the natural order of things.

He glanced at his beloved Land Rover. The back windscreen hadn’t yet been replaced after it was obliterated by the gunshot, and the vehicle looked ten years older than it was. He walked past it towards the large shed positioned on the edge of the property. This was where Michael and Deborah stored the furniture they would use when the house was extended. The current building was far too small and when Deborah had hinted on starting a family one day, Michael had consulted with an architect and plans were drawn up to make the house more practical. The planned building would effectively double the size of the house.

But Michael knew that wasn’t going to happen anymore. What was the point? There would be no family now and after what had happened to Deborah outside the house and Sebastien upstairs in the bedroom, Michael wasn’t sure if he even wanted to stay there anymore.

He unlocked the shed and swung open the door.
